This 2022 contest for Secretary of State has missed the issues. The issue is not whether Steve Simon has conducted the perfect election in 2022 or any other year because he has not. The issue is not whether Donald Trump beat Joe Biden, the candidates for Minnesota Secretary of State are not trying to decide–or deny–who was elected President of the United States in 2020.

The issue in the race for top election official in Minnesota–and for every other state in America–is whether Minnesota has control of our elections, now, or ever again in the future, it’s that bad. Can we avoid more January 6 repeats?

And the way Minnesota controls our elections is not through getting our man Steve in the office in the State Office Building at MLK Jr. Blvd in St. Paul, called the Secretary of State. It is through our laws, that's all we can do to make sure we can all go out and vote every two years when we reconstitute our government.

The issue is The Machines.

January 6, 2021 stands out in this August 9 primary race showing a stark contrast between incumbent Steve Simon and myself, and it shows the danger of national parties pulling out all the stops to overturn the party in power. Personally I was overseas during the Vietnam War in January 1973 when two Minnesota judges, Harry Blackmunn and Warren Burger, both appointed by Richard Nixon, rendered the notorious and destructive decision of Roe v. Wade. And at the same time the election rules were changed, creating a quota for women in one of the big national parties, the Democratic Party and its local franchise, the Minnesota DFL party. These two events, Roe v. Wade, and the adoption of quota voting by the Democrats--including "capping" men at 50% of the total vote in all caucus and conventions in nominating DFL candidates for the general election ballot--are related. Excluding men from nomination, first; makes it very difficult for any male to get support for a candidacy, but also; ensures that a cadre of militantly anti-life women can control policy on this issue. Gender quotas in voting ensure that Harry Blackmunn's obtuse rulng on the case of Jane Doe could never get better, only worse.

And now, during the 2022 primary, the issue came to a head as the wrong contention that the Constitution ensures a right for every woman to abort every fetus, as it has come to mean--that issue has been rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court in the Dobbs case and the issue has come back to the state of Minnesota for us to decide, through our Minnesota Legislature. That is one of the two main issues that caused the January 6th objection to certification, including violence. That violence need not have occurred on January 6th. But it did, because leaders in Congress--notably House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, but also the Vice President, Mike Pence did not ensure proper security. And so it is a prominent issue in my opposition to Steve Simon. We must bring Minnesota elections back to safety, safety is a central issue in the race for Minnesota Secretary of State.
